Founded in 1999, Metro Earthworks is a division of Shirley Contracting Corporation. The association with Shirley is one of Metro Earthworks' strengths, said Hurley as it provides a solid foundation within the industry as well as a broad background in construction. "Our relationship with Shirley allows us to operate as a separate company while realizing opportunities to benefit from our respective strengths," he said. "The relationship and our roots from Shirley have instilled the employee centered and personable environment that is actively cultivated at Metro Earthworks".

Over the past three years, Metro Earthworks has built up a broad base of clients in both the private and public sectors. The company has taken on projects for a host of customers, and has even filled the role of general contractor on selected projects. "We like to attaché projects that are particularly challenging, because we know that we have the creativity and the talent to achieve positive results" Hurley said.

Metro Earthworks has used that creativity to adapt to the changing marketplace and remain a growing company. With the impact of events to the vitality of the commercial market, Metro Earthworks was able to grow its presence in the residential and public markets identifying new areas of business, including school projects such as the Tenth high school in Prince William County, Virginia. "We are proud of our ability to respond to the changing market," Hurley said. "It's been exciting to establish relationships with new clients, explore new markets, and become involved with different types of projects."

Metro Earthworks has seen its projects become more challenging as time has passed, as witnessed in the following projects:

  • Target Store in Falls Church, Va.-working for L.F. Jennings, Inc. providing over 40,000cy of earthwork and associated site-work. The original project requirements called for the removal and replacement of unsuitable materials. However, work with Jennings and the owner representatives resulted in a revised plan to employ manipulation allowing the use of on site materials. The opportunity for significant savings was realized while providing the building pad for construction well ahead of schedule.
  • Defense CEETA at Fort Belvoir-working for the Army Corps of Engineers, Metro Earthworks was selected to act as the general contractor for the initial phase of the "S" Block project requiring shoring, demolition, utility relocates, and the excavation to dispose of nearly 70,000cy of material. Working with the Corp and Defense CEETA personnel as well as coordinating subcontractor efforts the project was successfully turned over in accordance with the fast-track schedule. Metro Earthworks continues its efforts on this project currently performing the site package for Manhattan Construction Company who is actively pursuing the building construction phase of the project.
  • The Tenth High School Project in Prince William County-working for Hess Construction Company and with a talented core of subcontractors, Metro Earthworks is pursing the 65 acre site development package requiring 800,000cy of earthwork. Challenges including those presented by the existing site materials are being overcome through a cooperative effort including the County and their project representatives. While work on the project continues, the team was able to achieve the turnover of the building pad for construction one month ahead of schedule.

Other notable project for Metro Earthworks include:

  • Costco in Springfield, VA for Whiting - Turner

Metro Earthworks has employed its experience in the public and private sectors to maintain a steady growth for the company. "We have managed to grow stronger as a function of our diversity, and our balance between public and private work has enabled that growth," said Hurley. "Our continued diversification has necessitated further client and subcontractor relationships, and we have seen an increase in repeat business as those relationships are fortified."

With a workforce of more than 75 employees and a wealth of knowledge behind it, Metro Earthworks continues to grow out of the mold of the traditional excavation company, offering a truly unique service package to its clients.
